Picocita, the refreshing hangover cure from Guatemala

A picocita, the Guatemalan hangover cure.

We already gave you some tips and tricks to get rid of your hangoverBut every country has its own traditional dishes to make the process go faster. We like to give you a taste of the international anti-hangover cuisine. This time we travel to Central America, Guatemala to be exact. Normally we advise you to enjoy our hangover food with a can of beer, but in this country the can of beer is actually part of the dish. It’s called picocita and the other main ingredient is a mix that can be best described as ceviche (that you might remember from our Peruvian post) without fish. No doubt you’ll be back on your feet in no time with this breakfast.

Well what can we tell you about Guatemala? Many people worship a saint called San Simon, who is known for his drinking, smoking and womanizing. And the country has an excellent local moonshine called cusha. But wait there is more! Guatemala has some great rums to offer, as well as guaro, a liquor distilled from sugar cane. And let’s not forget the national beer Gallo, which is simply everywhere. A nice traditional custom is that when a boy wants to marry a girl he has to show her father first how much he can drink. The more cusha he can take in, the more the father will approve of him as his son in law.

With that in mind it’s safe to say that booze is an important part of Guatemalan culture and with that the hangovers of course. Luckily there is a highly effective cure. In the country itself you can get picocitas at every ceviche stand, but it’s not hard to make it yourself either. Now it might be a little hard to find real Guatemalan beer in Europe or the United States, in that case we advise to take a Mexican beer like Corona or something. Anyway, let’s get started on those picocitas.

Ingredients:
1/2 small onion
1 jalapeño pepper
60 ml white vinegar
60 ml water
4 cans of beer (preferably Gallo)
salt
2 limes
Worcestershire sauce

Preparation:
Chop up the onion and jalapeño into tiny pieces. Mix it with the vinegar and water and let it rest for half an hour. Open the beers and drink a few sips to  create room in the can. Put 1/4th of a teaspoon salt into the open can. After that add a tablespoon of your special onion mixture. Now squeeze half a lime into the can and add a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. Repeat this process for the other three cans and enjoy your hangover cure.

  1. Ah, yes – San Simon – I became one of his followers not long ago. I will probably need this remedy tomorrow morning, after I spend the evening enthusiastically worshipping this most awesome of saints.

  2. Hey, thanks for stopping by. Good to be home. I am tired and could use some of this picosita relish…and I think i’d add to my fajitas and sip the corona instead.

I’d also have to omit the vinegar and add lime. vinegar is good for cleaning windows and cleaning out our insides.

Hope your life is good and joyous, Mr Lord. 🙂
