Are you worried about your weight? Can’t you lose those extra kilos no matter how much you watch your diet and work out? You might want to consider a diet of red wine. The Purdue University (United States) discovered in 2012 that the compound piceatannol in this drink (also in grapes and some other fruits) is able to block cellular processes that allow fat cells to develop. In simple words: red wine never gives fat a chance to grow on you. Ladies, are you reading this?!
Little by little scientists are proving that red wine is indeed very healthy. Just last month research showed that this elixir decreases the chances of depressions. But the drink has also served as a medicine to stay in shape physically for centuries. From the ancient Georgians and the Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra to the modern societies in the Mediterranean countries, red wine has played a prominent role in a healthy lifestyle. It was said to improve the digestion of food and good for the blood pressure.
The greatest advantage of red wine comes forward in a concept called the French Paradox. A term that exists since the early 1990’s, when researches noticed that less French people died of a coronary heart disease compared to Americans, even though they consumed way more saturated fat. Back to the Purdue University. It’s getting slightly scientific now, but stay with us. Researchers Kee-Hong Kim and Jung Yeon Kwon found piceatannol in red wine, a compound that has a similar structure as resveratrol, which is believed to fight cancer, heart diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. Resveratrol – mostly found in grapes – in the human body is converted in piceatannol. However, in wine this process is already done. Professor Kim believed that piceatannol is a mighty weapon to fight obesity: “Piceatannol actually alters the timing of gene expressions, gene functions and insulin action during adipogenesis, the process in which early stage fat cells become mature fat cells. In the presence of piceatannol, you can see delay or complete inhibition of adipogenesis.”
In simple words: thanks to piceatannol the process of cells becoming fat cells can be slowed down or even prevented. Right now the researchers from Purdue University are trying to have their first findings confirmed. Kim’s goal is to find a way to stop body fat gain by protecting the right dose of piceatannol in the bloodstream. Well he can experiment all he wants, we simply can’t wait that long primarily because we’re thirsty. So let’s just go old school and drink a lot of red wine. It might not be very healthy to overdo it like William the Conqueror did with his ‘all alcohol diet’, but at least we’ll keep a superslim figure.
