Revuelto Gramajo, the popular hangover cure from Argentina.

We already gave you some tips and tricks to get rid of your hangover. But every country has its own traditional dishes to make the process go faster. We like to give you a taste of the international anti-hangover cuisine. This time we travel to Argentina for a solid breakfast. Revuelto Gramajo can be ordered in practically every Argentinian restaurant or bodega and is highly effective. No soup but a solid greasy meal with eggs, ham and potatoes.

We write revuelto Gramajo with a capital since the dish is named after it’s inventor Artemio Gramajo. Revuelto is Spanish for scrambled eggs. The same dish can also be served as an omelette with the same ingredients, in which case it goes by the name omelet Gramajo. But more about food later. Let’s first take a look at the Argentinian drinking culture.

The first thing that will come to mind for most people is of course wine. As for Chile, that borders the long westside of the second largest country in South America quality wines are a major export product for Argentina. However, the counry itself has a lot more to offer. The large number of Northern European immigrants (mostly Germans and English) has resulted in a vibrant beer culture. The most famous brand is of course Quilmes, that you must have spotted somewhere if you ever watched Argentinian football.

But when Argentinians really start drinking their favorite drink is fernet with cola. It may seem like a weird combination but, as this writer experienced first hand in the company of Argentinian friends, it’s pretty damn tasty. Although it’s also known as a silent killer that can really mess you up. All the more reason to have a good hangover cure the next morning. Let’s check it out…

Ingredients:
2 red potatoes (350 grams in total)
500 ml vegetable oil
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
4 thin slices ham (preferably jamón ibérico)
4 large eggs
Salt and pepper

Preparation:
Scrub the potatoes and cut them into small ‘matchsticks’. Put the vegetable oil in a saucepan and bring to a heat of 180 degrees Celsius. Put in as many of the potato sticks as possible and fry till they’re golden brown (2-3 minutes). Then take them out and drain with paper towels. Repeat this proces until all the potato sticks are fried.
Now put one tablespoon ofolive oil in a skillet and bring to a medium heat. Put in the ham and let it get crispy. Then take it out and drain with paper towels.
Now break your eggs into a bowl and mix them with pepper and salt. Put the remaining olive oil in the skillet and add the eggs. After that put in the potato sticks and the crispy ham on top. For a revuelto Gramajo you whisk the ingredients in the skillet, for an omelet Gramajo you keep the the whole dish intact when you move it to a plate.

  1. This sounds very tasty. It’s worth getting smashed the night before just to have the hangover cure! Looks like this might be my Sunday morning breakfast 🙂

    • Yeah it seems like a decent replacement for an English breakfast. I used to have an English mate in Holland and every Sunday we had one of those. After 2 or 3 days of heavy drinking of course. 😀
      Cheers,
