Poutine, the greasy hangover cure from Quebec

The most basic poutine there is. This is the Canadian hangover cure.

We already gave you some tips and tricks to get rid of your hangover. But every country has its own traditional dishes to make the process go faster. We like to give you a taste of the international anti-hangover cuisine. Here’s a recipe for a typical cure from Quebec, the French speaking part of Canada. The dish is called poutine and it’s so greasy that it’s notorious all over the world. However it’s the same grease that makes this cure very effective.

In Canada it can get pretty cold, especially in winter. And what do you do when you get cold? Exactly, drink until you’re warm. Canadians have the name to handle their liquor quite a bit better than their neighbours in the south. And during the prohibition in the United States they played an active role providing people like Al Capone with hard liquor, to spread among the thirsty. Nowadays the legal drinking age in Canada depending on the province you’re in is 18 or 19. Quebec is one of the first provinces you can grab a drink as a teenager. It’s also the only part of Canada where you can walk around with an open unit of alcohol and even consume it in parks.

Makes Quebec for us the place to be. Even if you don’t speak French that well, we all know the language of alcohol right? This form of communication may lead to a serious hangover, but that’s where the local treat comes in; poutine. There are several versions possible (including one for vegetarians) but we’ll give you the most simple recipe with meat. Hope you’ll enjoy it.

1 liter of vegetable oil
300 ml beef gravy (canned or homemade)
5 potatoes cut to fries (or use French fries from the store)
200 gram of cheese curds

Heat up the oil in a frying pan and meanwhile warm up the gravy. Now fry your fries in the oil until they’re brown. When they’re done, put the fries in a plate covered with paper towels to catch some of the grease. Transfer to a second plate and smother the fries with the cheese. Now pour the gravy on top and you have a solid breakfast that will break down your hangover in no time. And with a Canadian ale next to it, you’ll feel better even faster. Cheers guys!
