We already gave you some tips and tricks to get rid of your hangover. But every country has its own traditional dishes to make the process go faster. We like to give you a taste of the international anti-hangover cuisine. This time we check out the German one with a dish that of course involves sauerkraut and wears a name like only ‘dze Germans’ have them: Katzenjammersuppe.
Germany, for many people this word is almost synonym for the famous Oktoberfesten. The images of long tables stashed with countless huge glasses of beer are legendary. So are the amounts of alcohol consumed during these parties. But Germany is more than just beers. In the southern regions some great sweet white wines are made, as well as ciders. And than there are numerous types of Schnapps (hard liquor). No wonder they also have something called the hangover soup. It’s very easy to make since this recipe is not really from scratch, so you can even do it while suffering from a severe hangover.
1 large piece of real butter
1 table spoon flour
1 teaspoon paprika powder
2 teaspoons caraway fruits (Kümmel)
1 liter stock (beef or chicken)
250 grams of sauerkraut
100 gram sausage (Mettwurst)
Melt the butter in a large pan and mix it with the flour. Add the onion, chopped in small pieces and leave it until the flour picks up a brown color. Now add the paprika powder and caraway fruits. Then put it the stock while stirring.
Squeeze the liquid from the sauerkraut above the pan. Now chop up the remaining cabbage in small pieces. Add this to the soup and let it boil softly for about 5 minutes. In this time you can take off the skin of the sausage and cut it into thin slices. Now put them into your soup and you’re done.
